The most amazing aspect of this autograph book is the presence of Lou Gehrig's signature. 1939 turned out to be his last season in baseball as soon after he signed this page, he made his memorable speech in Yankee stadium declaring that he considered himself "the luckiest man on the face of the earth," despite the fact that he had contracted the disease that ended his career, and soon after, his life.

Having passed away so soon after his playing days were over, "The Iron Horse" never had the chance to hit the autograph circuit like most famous players did. In addition to that, he is purported to have disliked signing during his career and his signature is one of hardest to find among all Hall of Famers. His memory was applauded in 1995 when Cal Ripken approached and surpassed his Consecutive games streak and he will always be remembered in the continuing fight to defeat the disease that not only ended his streak, but went on to end his life. Curt Schilling not only named his first son Gehrig, but has joined his wife as the most outspoken supporter of the fight to cure ALS... "Lou Gehrig's Disease."
